Dr. Charles Lin, THINC founding scientist, takes VP of Biology role at Kronos Bio

December 20, 2019 - Dr. Charles Lin, one of THINC’s founding scientists, is leaving BCM to become the Vice President of Biology at Kronos Bio. Dr. Lin has a passion for studying oncogenic transcription factors and turning those discoveries into new therapies for patients. This new position will allow him to continue this important work. While THINC is sad to see him go, we are excited for this next step in Dr. Lin’s career!

 

THINC Member Dr. Olivier Lichtarge named 2019 AAAS Fellow

November 26, 2019 - Dr. Olivier Lichtarge, Cullen Foundation Endowed Professor of molecular and human genetics and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and pharmacology at BCM, was elected in the section of biological sciences for distinguished contributions to field of computational biology. This honor is awarded to AAAS members for their distinguished efforts toward advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.

 

THE COOPER LAB PUBLISHES IN MUSCLE AND NERVE

October 23, 2019 - The publication titled, “Endurance exercise leads to beneficial molecular and physiological effects in a mouse model of myotonic dystrophy type 1” focuses on endurance exercise and how it relates to Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1).

 

DR. MARGARET GOODELL ELECTED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE!

October 21, 2019 - Dr. Margaret “Peggy” Goodell is among 100 new members of the National Academy of Medicine. She is the chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine and a valuable THINC member.

 

THINC MEMBER Dr. Stephen Mack RECEIVES FUNDING FOR RESEARCH!

October 17, 2019 - Dr. Stephen Mack received an Early Career Development grant from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation for his project “Harnessing Viral Mimicry to Target H3K27M-Driven Pediatric Glioma”.

 

SUSAN G. KOMEN HONORS THINC MEMBER, DR. MATTHEW ELLIS

October 9, 2019 - Dr. Ellis was honored by Susan G. Komen with the Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Clinical Research for his contributions to understanding the genomics of breast cancer and translating this knowledge to the clinic.

 

JOEL NEILSON IS THE RECIPIENT OF AN AWARD FROM THE SAMUEL WAXMAN CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION

September 10, 2019 - Dr. Neilson received a grant for his research on in vivo disruption of a novel translation pre-initiation complex as a putative therapeutic vulnerability for breast cancer differentiation therapy.

 

THINC MEMBER, DR. PEGGY GOODELL NAMED CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY!

August 29, 2019 - Dr. Goodell is a leader in the field of stem cell research and has been an integral part of many departments and Centers at Baylor College of Medicine. She is also the founding director of the Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine Center (STaR) and is internationally recognized for her work in regenerative medicine.

 

THINC MEMBERS AWARDED CPRIT GRANTS FOR CANCER RESEARCH AND PREVENTION

August 23, 2019 - THINC member Dr. Yohannes Ghebre is among recipients awarded grants by the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to support new cancer research and programs, core facilities, recruitment of new faculty and community outreach. BCM has been awarded more than $17.4 million in grants from CPRIT this year.

Dr. Courtney Hodges publishes review in Trends in Cancer

June 18, 2019 - The manuscript entitled “The Spatial and Genomic Hierarchy of Tumor Ecosystems Revealed by Single-Cell Technologies” reviews emerging high-resolution methods which can provide a view of tumor heterogeneity that recognizes the influence of diverse cell types and cell states of the tumor microenvironment.

 

THINC Member Dr. Rikhia Chakraborty receives career development award

May 31, 2019 - Dr. Rikhia Chakraborty, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics - Oncology, has received a Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Career Development Award, part of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs that foster novel approaches to biomedical research. The award provides support for her research on "Cancer immunotherapy as treatment option for Langerhans cell histiocytosis."

 

WARRIORS AGAINST CHORDOMA HOOPS CHALLENGE A SENSATION!

May 3, 2019 - Dr. Charles Lin attended the first Warriors Against Chordoma Hoops Challenge in Austin, Texas this spring. The event supported research being done with the Chordoma Foundation and was a huge success! THINC Member Dr. Changyi (Johnny) Chen Elected as Senior Member of NAI

February 13, 2019 - Dr. Changyi (Johnny) Chen, professor of surgery and of molecular and cellular biology at Baylor College of Medicine, has been elected to the rank of Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Senior Members are chosen for their “success in patents, licensing, and commercialization” and for producing “technologies that have brought, or aspire to bring, real impact on the welfare of society.”

 

DRS. STEPHEN MACK AND JOANNA YI ARE RECIPIENTS OF THE INAUGURAL THINC PILOT PROJECT AWARD

January 1, 2019 - Dr. Stephen Mack and Dr. Joanna Yi’s project titled “Degrading C11ORF95-RELA for Therapeutic Benefit in Ependymoma” will focus on uncovering how C11ORF95-RELA contributes to ependymoma etiology and discovering novel therapeutics for this pediatric malignancy.
